Cheddar cheese is named after the town in which it originated. Cheddar is a village located in Somerset County, Southwest England.
We can trace the origins of cheddar cheese back to the 12th century. Legend has it that a milkmaid accidentally left a pail of milk in a cave to keep it cool and forgot about it. When she returned a few days later, the milk had solidified...and she decided to taste it.
